Disentangling sentience from developmental plasticity
نویسندگان
چکیده
Plants, like animals, display remarkable developmental plasticity, inviting the metaphorical use of terms “decision” and “choice”. In animal case, this is not taken to be evidence sentience, because sentience a complex product development, something that guides it. We should apply same standards when evaluating in plants. It hard overstate contrast with case invertebrates such as octopuses, where pain markers were originally developed for mammals have been clearly demonstrated plausible neural substrates identified.

Developmental Plasticity, Straight from the Worm’s Mouth
Developmental plasticity in response to environmental conditions (polyphenism) plays an important role in evolutionary theory. Analyzing the nematode taxon Pristionchus, Ragsdale et al. demonstrate that a single gene underlies the nematode's ability to develop distinct mouth forms in response to environmental changes.
متن کاملDevelopmental plasticity
Developmental plasticity - the concept that adaptation to changing and unfavorable environmental conditions are possible but may come at the price of compromised health potentials - has evolutionary grounding as it facilitates survival but dissents with fundamental evolutionary principles in that it may advance the lesser fit. It is an important cornerstone of the Developmental Origins of Healt...

Early life constraints affecting phenotype in later life is a trend consistently observed across different species. Of particular relevance to evolutionary medicine are the effects of intra-uterine growth leading to diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and other age-related disorders. The broader question of conditions under which such developmental plasticity or predictive adaptive r...
متن کاملDevelopmental plasticity
Early life experiences can have profound and persistent effects on traits expressed throughout the life course, with consequences for later life behavior, disease risk, and mortality rates. The shaping of later life traits by early life environments, known as 'developmental plasticity', has been well-documented in humans and non-human animals, and has consequently captured the attention of both...
متن کاملSignalling for developmental plasticity.
We describe some of the regulatory mechanisms found in the signalling networks that mediate plant plasticity in response to the environment. In the absence of the relevant environmental cue, the response is often actively repressed at multiple levels, including chromatin structure, mRNA stability and protein degradation. The environmental signal normally initiates several pathways that share si...
